about the directory
The Alumni Career Directory is a network of thousands of alums from all Dartmouth schools who have volunteered to be resources for students and fellow alums who are in the process of searching for jobs. As Center for Professional Development states: "The focus of this network is on information and advice sharing. As representatives of their profession, advisors can provide information about the nature of their work, their career path, relevant graduate school programs, and related careers. As representatives of their place of employment, advisors can tell you about the culture of the organization, identify departments and individuals to send job inquiries to, and describe the qualifications their employer seeks."

GUidance for contacting alums
1. Research the alum before reaching out--what organization do they currently work with? What roles have they had in the past? Search for their LinkedIn page for the most current information and come up with specific questions you want to ask.
2. Write a simple, concise and compelling message. Ask for a time to talk, and give some times you are available. Check out an example email from the Center for Professional Development here.
3. Never ask for a job--instead, focus on getting to know alums as people and understanding their career path. What did they do immediately after college? What do they look for when they are hiring candidates? What professional degrees or certifications are required for their jobs?
4. After your conversation, don't forget to follow up!!
